Not sure if it was the time of day (12 noon), the distance, the destination, or what ... apparently, business is booming for these cab drivers to be so damn picky about where they're heading.
Until we thought we found one that agreed ... when we asked him to turn into the alley where our hotel was located, he zoomed away abandoning us with puzzled expressions on our faces. Uhh, what just happened??
After many more "no's" we finally got a reluctant "yes." When we explained to him that he would have to turn down an alley to retrieve our luggage from the hotel, he said, "OK." We were thrilled. We also made sure that the meter was working. Yup. This was the one! We ran and grabbed our bags. We were so grateful, I think we nearly had tears in our eyes. Gosh, had he said no ? ... We were getting desperate since our train was scheduled to leave at 2:45 PM, and we didn't know how long it would take us to get to the station.
As expected during lunch hour there was some traffic. The ride took about 30, maybe 40 minutes because of the slight jam. But it ended up costing us only 95 Baht (about $3 USD)! We were so grateful to him, we gave him 125 Baht, which he was more than happy with!
We hopped out of the cab, grabbed our stuff, and made our way into Hua Lamphong happy to have made it in plenty of time and to have survived such fussiness.
Cabs come in all colors in Bangkok. |
